Walead_Beshty_The_Curve_Barbican_Cyanotype_Prints_01

London-Born, Los Angeles-based artist Walead Beshty recently papered the entire Curve at The Barbican with a floor to ceiling display of Cyanotype prints. These photographic prints are a collection of random objects applied to discarded paper using a photo sensitive coating leaving a silhouetted print. With over 1200 prints created over one year between Los Angeles and London, this epic display created on surfaces such as news print and cardboard packaging is both beautiful and fascinating. The installation is on display at the Barbican until 8 Feburary 2015 see more here.

Holding_Pattern_Lauren_Oneill_Airport_Photography_11

Pattern is everywhere and the Patternbank team stumbled across these inspirational aerial photos from Lauren O’Neill. She explains ‘I’ve been fascinated by airports for as long as I can remember — there’s something about the comings + goings, the organization + operation … ultimately the systems of design at play … that’s so intriguing to me. Whether DCA, JFK, or the little municipal airport, I’ve always lived in a direct flight pattern of an airport. Day-to-day, I glance out my window and watch planes circle about waiting to land.’ Her Tumblr site is an amazing visual collection of Google Maps satellite grabs – enjoy !

Gerhard_Richter_Abstract_Blurred_pattern_smeared_Photography_09

We are big fans of German artist  Gerhard Richter here at Patternbank. His trademark smeared paintings mix colour and pattern in a unique and amazing style. In this post we’ve focused on Richter works that incorporate  paint and photos. This connects the photographic images, mostly snapshots taken by the artists himself, in a very immediate and physical way. Richter uses his paint laden squeegee to drag a colourful mixture across his photos creating a fascinating visual combination.  Check out the award winning short film explaining how Richter creates his stunning work – Gerhard Richter’s Window. You might also want to check out Artsy.net who have a very comprehensive amount of information on Gerhard.
