The Patternbank team love the digital environments that Mark Dorf creates seeking out unfamiliar landscapes and juxtaposing nature with art and digital photography. The subtle colour changes in background colour emphasise landscapes that sometimes seam unreal in themselves. Dorf is from a family based in science and the arts and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, you can see more of his art work at mdorf.com

Gerhard_Richter_Abstract_Blurred_pattern_smeared_Photography_09

We are big fans of German artist  Gerhard Richter here at Patternbank. His trademark smeared paintings mix colour and pattern in a unique and amazing style. In this post we’ve focused on Richter works that incorporate  paint and photos. This connects the photographic images, mostly snapshots taken by the artists himself, in a very immediate and physical way. Richter uses his paint laden squeegee to drag a colourful mixture across his photos creating a fascinating visual combination.  Check out the award winning short film explaining how Richter creates his stunning work – Gerhard Richter’s Window. You might also want to check out Artsy.net who have a very comprehensive amount of information on Gerhard.

Patternbank were drawn to the work of Joan Saló, with delicate fine lines and subtle colour combinations Saló’s paintings are unusual in that he uses traditional pen and ink to create abstract yet orderly compositions. It’s nice to see the trend for a more simplistic hand drawn quality of work after so much digital and photographic imagery of the past. Saló lives and works between Barcelona and Berlin. You can see more of his work here.
