Astrocyte took place at the Design Exchange’s EDIT: Expo for Design, Innovation, and Technology from September 28 to October 8, 2017. The 10 day festival presented to thousands of visitors the ground-breaking innovations that take the UNDP’s Sustainable Development Goals to heart, sparking conversations about the future of design. Astrocyte is part of the larger scope of work of the Living Architecture Systems: a research cluster that combines art, architecture, engineering, and science into experiential test-beds, hoping to address questions about the future of built environments – Can architecture integrate living functions? Could future buildings think, and care? And how can we design living architecture that enhances the ways in which we interact with the environment and with each other? To find out more about Astrocyte and its creator, artist and architect Philip Beesley visit Philip Beesley Architect Inc.

Patternbank are loving the work of Eva Magill-Oliver. With her base in the mountains of North Carolina Eva has developed her art, from her uniquely paper based collage to include oil and acrylic on canvas. Inspired by her surroundings Eva says, “Nature has always been my main source of inspiration. It informs both the subject matter and color palettes in my work. The natural world is an infinite resource for documenting and exploring shapes, patterns, and textures. It also invites personal reflection and meditation. My landscapes and abstracts are a perfect example of this intersection of physical surroundings and self-awareness. They are a simple representation of a contemplative process and express a quiet intensity that reflects my own personality”. See more of Eva’s portfolio here. You can also follow her on Instagram and check out her progress by visiting her blog.

Every now and then we stumble across new artists artwork that stops us in our tracks. These mixed media paintings are a collection of found photos, which use oil paint, and vibrant pattern overlays to breath fresh life into forgotten memories of yesteryear. Denver based artist Daisy Patton is behind these intriguing brushes with the past. The Patternbank team are loving the more vibrant pieces, where colourful florals or tropical plants have been awoken by Daisy’s creative brushwork. See more of her work here.

Patternbank love Frida Wannerberger. The illustrator has an innate fascination for beautiful things, the world and the un-everydaily. There is a subtle narrative to her work, expressing an intense love for clothes. An analytical relationship with what we wear along with an attraction to details, ultimately led her onto the path of illustration for fashion. Trained at Central Saint Martins, Frida graduated 2013 with a BA in Graphic Design and Illustration. Frida currently lives in London, where she is an Associate Lecturer on the BA Fashion Illustration Course at London College of Fashion. Mixing pop culture icons with stylised artworks, designer BFGF caught our eye recently. These fresh homewares are the work of Lilian Martinez who calls her creative endeavor BFGF an “Art Brand”. Patternbank were drawn to the compelling randomness of the content. Simpson’s characters, sports brand logos, historic female sculptures, and basketballs all feature within her work. Mixing history, pop culture elements, and tropical plant life to create amazing art pieces. Based in California BFGF sells through her website and Society6.

Patternbank are loving this visually enhanced photographic series entitled ‘Constructed’, by artist, illustrator and designer Pawel Nolbert. Pawel blends graphic and photography elements and poses questions like: where does the “photo” end and “graphy” begin?  The use of what tools make it a photography, and distinct it from a graphic? Does it make sense to create that distinction anymore?
Pawel has a high calibre of companies that he has worked for, these include Nike, Google, Apple, Sony and Disney to name a few. See more of his jaw dropping work at nolbert.com
