Striking Linework

scotchblue-patternbank-striking-linework

From tabby cats and wood grain to crosswalks and ladder rungs, stripes are all around you. Their simple structure makes them a classic pattern that’s been used for thousands of years – but it also means that they’re a vital part of modern design vocabulary. Lately, there’s been a resurgence of stripes with a bold, modern twist. Our Striking Linework pattern reflects that trend, and incorporates sharp angles that personalize the simple stripe and give it power. A fractured, abstract look also helps dimensionalize stripes to add depth and form to any surface.

Mod Optic

scotchblue-patternbank-mod-optic

3D geometric designs might seem relatively new, but you can find them in unexpected places – like woven baskets, latticework, and marble floors – that have existed for centuries. More recently, well-known artists like M.C. Escher have also drawn on these strong mathematical shapes and forms to define what’s known as “optical art.” Building on these traditions, bold geometric designs are now making their way back into the market with subtle twists in scale and color. Our Mod Optic pattern draws on these strong three-dimensional patterns for a clean, modern style that communicates sophistication and audacity.

Our designers and developers have been busy over the last few months working on some amazing new features on the Patternbank Textile Design Studio. The most significant upgrade is the ability to view all of the designs in 3 scenarios; a dress, a swimsuit and a duvet and pillow set – this enables buyers to easily visualise how the designs may look out in the wild.

We also have a new zoom function that lets buyers take a closer look at the detail of a design before they make a purchase – this also speeds up upload time as designers no longer need to create individual previews. We’ve also cleaned up the design of the site allowing the designs to be the stars and added large header images throughout, to better showcase the amazing designs.

Varpu_Kronholm_Featured_Studio_Designer_Patternbank_4

Today we’re featuring the work of textile print designer Varpu Kronholm, in our ongoing series highlighting the many talented designers here on the Patternbank Textile Print Design Studio. Varpu’s background is actually in fashion design but after a stint working for a designer her passion for pattern steered her towards a career in freelance textile design. Galleries, museums and creative media are a source of inspiration for the designer, but often Varpu takes influence from her surroundings, ” I walk down the street and I see a some spilt paint or a beautiful texture on the pavement and I immediately want to get working! Different textures are actually something that are inspiring me a lot at the moment.” Marimekko has influenced Varpu’s style and taste from an early age but when asked which designer she most admires Varpu answered , “It’s unfair to pick out just one favourite but for example I really admire Gunta Stölzl. She lifted textile design from just being a craft to a modern art form. Her works are simply stunning and some look incredibly contemporary even today after about 90 years!”

Take a look at more of her amazing designs here on her profile page. The featured design above is Citrus and is available exclusively on the Patternbank Studio as are all the designs shown here.

Part 2 of Milan’s Spring/Summer 2015 catwalk shows offer a carnival of colour and pattern. Stella Jean embraced her roots with painted Haitian landscapes and African prints in sun drenched brights while Prada delivered a ‘make do and mend’ approach to fashion, with patched together brocade and contrast top stitching. Bold animal skins from Cavalli  and fun food motifs from Au Jour Le Jour provided plenty of energy and fun. Stay with us for highlights from the Paris Catwalks coming soon

Print and pattern inspiration for Spring/Summer 2015 continues to appear on the New York catwalks this week. The Patternbank team have selected more of the key print looks for part 2 of S/S15 New York highlights. With more pattern rich collections showing, tropical and botanical prints are evident as a key trend. Tracy Reese offers a creative and eclectic combination of prints and other themes from the designers include hyper-real florals, pop art inspired looks and a dip into 60’s hippy culture. Enjoy!
