Today we’re featuring the work of textile print designer Varpu Kronholm, in our ongoing series highlighting the many talented designers here on the Patternbank Textile Print Design Studio. Varpu’s background is actually in fashion design but after a stint working for a designer her passion for pattern steered her towards a career in freelance textile design. Galleries, museums and creative media are a source of inspiration for the designer, but often Varpu takes influence from her surroundings, ” I walk down the street and I see a some spilt paint or a beautiful texture on the pavement and I immediately want to get working! Different textures are actually something that are inspiring me a lot at the moment.” Marimekko has influenced Varpu’s style and taste from an early age but when asked which designer she most admires Varpu answered , “It’s unfair to pick out just one favourite but for example I really admire Gunta Stölzl. She lifted textile design from just being a craft to a modern art form. Her works are simply stunning and some look incredibly contemporary even today after about 90 years!”

Take a look at more of her amazing designs here on her profile page. The featured design above is Citrus and is available exclusively on the Patternbank Studio as are all the designs shown here.

Varpu also designs for Patternbank Premium our collection of one-off designs (once a design is sold it is instantly removed from the site), this section of the site is a members-only area aimed at key buyers in the fashion and surface design industry where access is granted on application.

Victoria _&_Albert_print_pattern_ipad_app_William_Morris_9

We love a bit of tech at Patternbank and we thought we’d share this beautifully stylish iPad app from the Victoria & Albert Museum. The game is based on William Morris’s classic 19th century textile print the “Strawberry Thief”. In the game you use the Strawberry Thief bird as your cursor to collect fruit and repaint this Arts & Crafts master piece. First you uncover pencil work of swirling vines and intricate flowers on paper, then basic colours fills the screen and finally rich colour and texture brings the 1883 artwork to life.

Games designer in residence at the V&A Sophia George was the creative brains behind this touchscreen app, bringing the Arts & Crafts movement bang up to date in stunning style. You can download the app for free in the App Store.

British artist Anna Raymond was featured in a post we did a little while back and after recently stumbling on her work again we had to highlight some of her latest creations. The artist says ‘I use my practice to examine and challenge the everyday environment in a series of one off textile prints. I highlight over familiar images and icons to reveal an obsessive collection of thoughts, moments and memories. I work to create a visual index of characters which analyse reality by materialising data.’ See more from Anna here.

Graphic artist Naia Ceschin was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil so its no wonder the talented designer went on to win a position on the design team at Brazillian based brand Havaianas. After graduating from ESPM the artist won a competition to join the famous flipflop company and eventually moved on in search of inspiration for her own art. Patternbank love Naia’s graphic use of lively pattern and bold colour pallete with a huge dose of carnival atmosphere. Check out more from the artist here.
