We love a bit of tech at Patternbank and we thought we’d share this beautifully stylish iPad app from the Victoria & Albert Museum. The game is based on William Morris’s classic 19th century textile print the “Strawberry Thief”. In the game you use the Strawberry Thief bird as your cursor to collect fruit and repaint this Arts & Crafts master piece. First you uncover pencil work of swirling vines and intricate flowers on paper, then basic colours fills the screen and finally rich colour and texture brings the 1883 artwork to life.
Games designer in residence at the V&A Sophia George was the creative brains behind this touchscreen app, bringing the Arts & Crafts movement bang up to date in stunning style. You can download the app for free in the App Store.

British artist Anna Raymond was featured in a post we did a little while back and after recently stumbling on her work again we had to highlight some of her latest creations. The artist says ‘I use my practice to examine and challenge the everyday environment in a series of one off textile prints. I highlight over familiar images and icons to reveal an obsessive collection of thoughts, moments and memories. I work to create a visual index of characters which analyse reality by materialising data.’ See more from Anna here.
Graphic artist Naia Ceschin was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil so its no wonder the talented designer went on to win a position on the design team at Brazillian based brand Havaianas. After graduating from ESPM the artist won a competition to join the famous flipflop company and eventually moved on in search of inspiration for her own art. Patternbank love Naia’s graphic use of lively pattern and bold colour pallete with a huge dose of carnival atmosphere. Check out more from the artist here.

Pattern is everywhere and the Patternbank team stumbled across these inspirational aerial photos from Lauren O’Neill. She explains ‘I’ve been fascinated by airports for as long as I can remember — there’s something about the comings + goings, the organization + operation … ultimately the systems of design at play … that’s so intriguing to me. Whether DCA, JFK, or the little municipal airport, I’ve always lived in a direct flight pattern of an airport. Day-to-day, I glance out my window and watch planes circle about waiting to land.’ Her Tumblr site is an amazing visual collection of Google Maps satellite grabs – enjoy !
Taking inspiration from a dip into the past, Patternbank discovered this print and pattern rich feature for Vogue Italia in December 2007 by celebrated photographer Steven Meisel. Despite their vintage these amazing shots have a timeless artistic quality reminiscent of Gustav Klimt’s exuberant pattern use. Where Klimt’s detailed patterns are in direct contrast with his subject’s skin, in Meisel’s shots the model’s tattooed limbs appear chameleon like, blending with the the twisted landscape of printed fabrics. See more of Steven Meisel’s portfolio of photography here.
Patternbank love the vibrantly colourful paintings and prints by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. Milhazes is well known for her work which draws on both Latin American and European Traditions. A first major retrospective of her large-scale abstract paintings inspired by Brazilian and European Modernism, Baroque forms, popular culture, and the decorations of Carnival is on show from Sept 19th 2014 – Jan 18th 2015 at Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Today we are featuring the work of textile print designer Velvetgoldmine in our ongoing series highlighting the fantastic designers here on the Patternbank Textile Print Design Studio. Sylvie Nowack is a french graphic designer who designs under the name Velvetgoldmine. Sylvie’s patterns start with sketches made by hand and her own photos which are then manipulated in illustrator or photoshop. There is a love of nature and animals in her work with colour and geometry being a strong underlying feature.
Patternbank think her work has a distinct feel and understanding sympathetic to pattern which is crucial in surface design and fashion print. Take a look at more of her amazing designs here on her profile page. The featured design above is Blue Garden Pattern and is available exclusively on the Patternbank Studio as are all the designs shown here.

The Patternbank team were at Berlin fashion week to visit the European mega show Bread & Butter, as well as dropping into Premium, Seek and Bright. The shows were busy but not to capacity this season. Things all change next season with Bread & Butter moving to Barcelona for its January 2015 show. An Asian edition is also planned to launch next September giving a truly international flavour to Bread & Butter’s trade show presence.
Updated Tropicals, warped visuals and oddball conversations are still continuing to trend. New fresh print & graphics seen included weird botanicals and tie dye techniques, reworked vintage Hawaiian prints and reflective street graphics.
