01-monica-rohan

Monica Rohan’s paintings so beautifully depict her love of nature and highly patterned textiles, she is particularly inspired by artist Edouard Vuillard and his use of pattern. Rohan grew up in South East Queensland where her rural upbringing has inspired and strengthened a love of natural surroundings often remote, that brings with it that same sense of isolation that can be found in her paintings. The subjects (herself) are always hidden, buried in a mass of textiles or overgrown nature wrapped in a playful yet slightly anxious way almost swallowing her up. Powerful and physical at the same time her paintings are certainly thought provoking and with two exhibitions selling out she has certainly captivated a growing audience. You can see more of her work at janmurphygallery.com and sophiegannongallery.com

RETAIL-SNAPSHOT-TRAINERS-IN-PRINT-0002

Pattern and print is everywhere at the moment and in particular the trainer market who are joining forces with some of the most talented designers and artists around. From Liberty teaming up with brands like Nike and Vans to adorn trainers with classic Liberty patterns to more new contemporary prints. Also designers Eley Kishimoto and artists Zio Ziegler and Takashi Murakami have added their distinctive style to the Vans classic slip-on, clothing and bags.

A fairly new company Inkkas has adopted a novel way of choosing which trainers to put into production by crowdfunding their product first. This way they can see which styles are more popular before they commit to production. Not only that they take an ethical approach to production too, crafted with respect for the environment and the people who make them and for every product purchased they plant a tree. Print and pattern is not going away anytime soon and with new advances in technology it looks like it’s here to stay. Patternbank would like to think this is the begins of a pattern take over!

Megan_McNeill_Rouda_Australian_Fashion_Label_07

We’re loving Melbourne based label Rouda which is the brainchild of textile designer Megan McNeill. Her work has recently caught the attention of the Patternbank team and here we ask Megan a few questions about how she got started and about her success to date, with an insight into what inspires her beautiful work.

Megan_McNeill_Rouda_Australian_Fashion_Label_04

How did you get into designing textiles, did one thing start your career?

I was always a keen sewer and drawer. After high school I began studying fashion design and there was something about it that I wasn’t quite enjoying about it. One of my classrooms was shared with the textile design faculty at the university and I was fascinated by the beautiful patterns hung on the walls, and transferred over to study textile design that next year. Funnily enough, I returned to fashion design when I launched my own clothing label, Rouda, last year.
