01-katie-scott-wild-flower-botanicum

Patternbank are a big fan of Katie Scott’s work and with the release of her new book Botanicum next month we thought we’d share some of the illustrations with you, along with others from her book Animalium. Scott was also asked to create this animated “living wallpaper” for Publicis for their London office, taking her work to another level. “Together we created two seamlessly looping animations for display on an ultra-wide projector system and an LCD video wall. The animations evolve slowly over time, creating a subtle sense of movement with their fantastical botanical activity. This brings an intriguing feeling of change to the space in which they are displayed.” Truly beautiful and captivating work.

Frances_Doherty_Ceramic_Blooms_4

Brighton based sculptor Frances Doherty had originally expressed her creativity in a more culinary manner as the owner of a restaurant, but after experimenting with ceramics at an evening class, Frances was inspired to study in Ceramics, Plastics and Photography. The artist graduated in 2001 and set up her workshop in Hove, renting out space to other artists and designers. With an interest in nature the artist says, “My inspiration comes from flowers and plants that we see all around us, in gardens, fields even cracks in the pavement. I particularly love the secret worlds inside these flowers, in the patterns and textures hidden away that give a continuing sense of promise and renewal. I like to play with scale and will often imagine the size that a plant must appear to an insect…what is it about the flower that attracts or repels?  Often I will scale my sculpture up so that we can have an ‘insects eye view’ of it.” See more of Frances’s ceramic sculptures on her website.

Cicero_989

We recently discovered the work of Berlin based artist Romy Blümel, her intricately detailed and beautifully stylised illustrations are captivating and intriguing. In the process of creating her artworks, Romy employs an unusual technique – a combination of emulating the look of a woodcut or linocut but in her preferred medium of painting. Working in paint allows Romy to communicate with a broad spectrum of colour and to utilise the texture of brush strokes, be they bold or subtle. She often draws directly on to an area of paint with a knife. Paintings are sometimes merged with ink drawings, layers being created in several stages. The combination creates a unique and luminescent image, with striking textures and vivid colours.
